Soldier Pile Shoring/Berlin Walls

Soldier piles shoring also called Berlin wall shoring consists of relatively widely spaced around 1.00m to 2.50m soldier piles and infill wooden or concrete panels. Soldier pile shoring is one the economical types of shoring where the excavation is to be carried out under dry soil conditions.

Process

Typically, steel H-piles, 2C or W sections are used as soldier piles.  The piles can be driven, vibrated, or installed in pre-drilled boreholes depending upon the soil conditions as well as vibration tolerance of adjacent structures.  Once the soldier piles are driven, excavation in front of the soldier piles is carried out in small steps around 0.50m to 1.50m and wooden or concrete panels are installed in between the soldier piles.

Common Uses:

  • Protection of existing structures
  • Lateral support system for earth only.
  • Construction of underpasses, metro stations and deep basement excavations

Advantages

  • Shallow excavations.
  • Construction in hard strata
  • Relatively high lateral movement due to ground loss during excavation.
