Surcharge + PVD
Surcharge + PVD, a dynamic solution, combines the prowess of Prefabricated Vertical Drains (PVD), also recognized as Wick Drains or band drains. PVD comprises geotextile filter-wrapped plastic strips with molded channels, serving as efficient drainage conduits. They ingeniously expedite the removal of pore water from soft, compressible soils, enabling accelerated consolidation under a sustained surcharge load.
Process
Surcharge + PVD, a dynamic approach, fuses the effectiveness of prefabricated Wick Drains, also known as PVDs, ideal for efficient water transportation. These ingenious strips feature a flexible polypropylene core with grooves on both sides, allowing unhindered water flow. Wrapped in robust geotextile filter fabric, they facilitate the entry of pore water without clogging, effectively preventing fines from neighboring soils.
The installation process involves feeding the drain through a hollow mandrel, attached to an expendable anchor plate at the bottom, and utilizing either a vibratory hammer or a static method to insert it to the specified depth. After removal, the Wick Drain remains in place, and the process is repeated, creating a pattern of vertical wick drains that provide concise drainage pathways for pore water. This not only expedites consolidation but also accelerates construction schedules in a remarkably efficient manner.
